InnerFocus Physical Therapy – Bloomfield & Edgewater, New Jersey

InnerFocus Physical Therapy

Here's how we can help.

Dr. Jennifer Gentile, PT, DPT is a dual specialist in pelvic floor therapy and sports therapy.

Pelvic Floor Therapy Services

Pelvic health physical therapy is a specialized field of physical therapy that involves the examination and treatment of pelvic floor muscles and dysfunction. Pelvic floor physical therapists are Doctors of Physical Therapy who have pursued additional education and hands-on training to address pelvic floor pain, weakness, and dysfunction.

At InnerFocus Physical Therapy, you will receive one hour long, personalized treatments that are one-on-one with the physical therapist. Sessions include education, manual treatment, and exercise to help with your pelvic floor dysfunction as they relate to your bladder or bowel control, pelvic pain, or painful sexual activity. We look at finding the cause of the problem so the symptoms don’t come back.

Sports Physical Therapy Services

Pelvic floor issues like leaking urine and pelvic pain are common in athletes and dancers, but they are underrecognized and undertreated. Sports physical therapy sessions are hour long, one-on-one sessions with the physical therapist. At InnerFocus Physical Therapy we will examine how your pelvic floor may be contributing to your symptoms, including symptoms in your back and hip.

With experience and advanced training in both sports and pelvic floor physical therapy, Dr. Jennifer Gentile has a holistic treatment approach to address the impairments in athletes. We will address the cause of your issue, rather than only treating the symptoms, with a focused, directed treatment program.

Meet Dr. Jennifer Gentile, PT, DPT

Dr. Jennifer Gentile earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in 2001 from New York University and a bachelor’s degree from Villanova University in 1996. She is a licensed physical therapist in both New Jersey and New York. In 2012, Dr. Gentile has been named a board-certified clinical specialist in sports physical therapy by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties and recertified in 2022. She earned a Certificate of Achievement in Pregnancy and Postpartum Physical Therapy (CAPP-OB) and a Certificate of Achievement in Pelvic Health Physical Therapy (CAPP-Pelvic), both through the APTA’s Academy of Pelvic Health. Through her dual certifications, Jennifer is uniquely qualified to address pelvic musculoskeletal needs in athletes of all levels.

In addition to her clinical work as a physical therapist, Jennifer teaches doctoral physical therapy students in the classroom and is a teaching assistant for the APTA’s Academy of Pelvic Health for courses related to pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum physical therapy care.

InnerFocus Physical Therapy was created to help those experiencing pelvic health issues related to sports participation or pregnancy. Jennifer currently works with pregnant and postpartum clients for both orthopedic and pelvic floor-related issues, those experiencing urine leakage from activities of daily life or sports participation, and people with pain in their back, pelvis, or hips.

Outside of the clinic, Jennifer can be found baking, reading, or attending a swim meet. She participates in several professional committees for both sports and pelvic health physical therapy. She is passionate about increasing awareness and recognition of pelvic floor issues of the athlete in the sports medicine community. To that end, she has presented at sports conferences on the state and national levels regarding pelvic floor issues in athletes.

Common is not normal.

There are many different symptoms that we have either accepted as “normal” simply because they are common. Pain in the lower back or pelvis is common in pregnancy or the postpartum period, but that does not mean that it is normal.

At InnerFocus Physical Therapy we provide services during pregnancy or the postpartum period to address current pains and to help to return to normal activities and after birth.

Stress urinary incontinence may be common but not normal. Are you leaking when you sneeze, cough, or jump? Leaking urine during sports participation is common in sports and more common in sports like gymnastics, cheer, running, or volleyball. Leaking has been noted in athletes of all ages including teenagers. Some people don’t leak but need to use the bathroom frequently.

At InnerFocus, we can address your urinary symptoms with a pelvic floor treatment plan designed specifically for you.

Pelvic pain can occur in anyone at any age. Pain can come from muscle spasms in the pelvis or pelvic floor, nerve compression, or other reasons. Pelvic pain can be associated with hip pain or low back pain and may be the reason your hip or back is hurting.

Who we work with.

All treatment sessions are one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist.

Pregnancy/Postpartum

The body undergoes amazing changes during pregnancy and these changes affect how the body moves and functions. At InnerFocus we treat diagnoses common during pregnancy and the postpartum period including pelvic girdle pain, low back pain, Sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction, pubic symphysis dysfunction, diastasis recti (DRA), painful intercourse, core weakness, coccydynia, pelvic pain, scarring from cesarean birth or episiotomy.

Athletes

Hip or back pain can often be affected by unrecognized issues in the pelvic floor. At InnerFocus, we examine the body as a whole and include the pelvic floor in our orthopedic assessment and treatment plan. Common treatment diagnoses include pelvic girdle pain, low back pain, Sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction, hip pain, snapping hip, pelvic pain, stress urinary incontinence (leaking urine), core weakness, and other orthopedic issues. We can work with your orthopedic physical therapist to create a complete plan of care.

Dancers

Dancers need to have control and strength over extreme ranges of motion. This can create both orthopedic and pelvic floor issues. Common diagnoses include low back pain or instability, pelvic girdle pain, Sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction, pelvic pain, hip pain, snapping hip, stress urinary incontinence (leaking urine), and other orthopedic issues.

Wellness Consultation

Health care is moving towards a prevention model and physical therapists, as movement specialists, have a place in this transition. At InnerFocus we provide consultation and programs for preseason orthopedic screenings for athletes, exercise guidance during pregnancy, postpartum return to sports programs, pelvic floor preparation for labor and delivery, physical therapy for mastitis, and orthopedic considerations for infant feeding/care.

Your questions, answered.

Finding the right PT is important. We answer some of the most frequently asked questions below.

The physical therapist will review your health history and you will have the opportunity to share the issues that brought you to physical therapy. We will discuss the orthopedic and pelvic floor exam and you can ask questions. We will look at the entire body, including posture, strength, motion. If an internal pelvic floor muscle assessment is appropriate for you, we will discuss it then. We believe in a collaborative treatment model where you participate in your care.

New Jersey is a Direct Access state where you can see a physical therapist without a prescription. You should ask your insurance plan if they require a prescription for reimbursement.

InnerFocus is able to see most orthopedic and pelvic floor issues. To see if we are able to provide expert care for your issue you can send us a message or schedule a free 15-minute telehealth consultation.

InnerFocus is out of network with all insurance plans and is a fee for service provider. Payment is required at the time of service and we accept most credit cards, including flexible spending account (FSA) cards, checks and cash.

We provide clients with a super-bill to submit for reimbursement from their insurance plan. It is the client’s responsibility to determine if they have out-of-network benefits and to learn what is needed to apply for reimbursement.

We have no relationship with Medicare/Medicaid and due to Medicare/Medicaid policies, we cannot enter into a private payment contract with Medicare/Medicaid policyholders.
